I don’t how to say this but I’ve been feeling really sad as of late? A friend mention to me that I might be depressed but the only thing I could think of is “I don’t have the time to be depressed” and “I don’t fit the criteria of being depressed.” Whenever I get this feeling I wait for it to pass. Sometimes it takes days while other days it takes weeks for the feeling to go away.

Hey there,
I’m sorry to hear that you are going through a difficult time. Though there are certain things that people who are depressed have in common, everyone is different. Sometimes, depressive symptoms can last for a short while (days), and other times, it can last longer (weeks and months). I understand what you mean about not having time to be depressed. Sometimes, it can be really inconvenient to start feeling badly seemingly out of nowhere. Here is some more information on depression:

Most of the time, people think of Major Depression, but that is not the only kind of depression out there. Because there are so many types of depression, it is more common than you know. Here is more information on different types of depression:

I highly recommend talking to someone about how you’ve been feeling. Your doctor can help point you in the right direction. A counselor can also be of help. I think www.psychologytoday.com is a great resource for looking for a counselor or support group. You can search by type and by location. Be open and honest with people who are closest to you. They can offer support and suggest ways to help you.
Make sure you stay active during this time of sadness and when the sadness is gone. It is important to keep up a routine and to keep yourself occupied. Take care of yourself or someone else. Someone else can be a pet or a plant. It is important to do something constructive to prevent you from doing something destructive. Make sure you are getting enough sleep and eating the way you should. Here is more information on depression:

Hang in there!
